Request for Proposals

In the spirit of public discourse, the University of Chicago chapter of Students for a Democratic Society is seeking alternative proposals for the Milton Friedman Institute for Economic Research. You may approach the proposal however you like, including (but certainly not limited to) completely redesigning the site and/or creating new organizations to inhabit the space.

The U of C is currently seeking $200 million in donations for the MFI's endowment; please treat that sum as your hypothetical budget for capital and operating costs.

Because our goal is promoting discussion about the MFI rather than heralding the best proposal, submissions will be shared with the public through this website, public events and printed materials.

If you plan to submit a proposal, we request you email mfi@ourMFI.org with your contact information at your earliest convenience. Doing so will also allow us to notify you if additional resources become available for the project.

All proposals should be submitted electronically to mfi@ourMFI.org by November 1, 2009. Questions about the RFP may also be emailed to the same address.

While we are open to submissions of all types, we ask you include the following elements in your proposal.

Section 1 - Introduction

The components of this section should be compiled into a single text document and should be formatted as an Open Office, Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format or Adobe PDF file.

      Basic Information
      • Name of individual or group
      • Contact information

      Abstract
      • A brief description of the project.

      Statement
      • A one-to-two page document explaining the ideas behind the project.

Section 2 - The main proposal

    If your proposal is visual:
    • Include up to four low-resolution scans, photographs or renderings of your proposed project in jpg or png format. Each image should be less then 1MB.
    • Additionally, include one textual document describing the images. The document should be formatted as an Open Office, Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format or Adobe PDF file.

    If your proposal is textual:
    • Include one additional textual document containing the text of your proposal. The document should be formatted as an Open Office, Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format or Adobe PDF file.
Submitting a project indicates interest in inclusion in printed and electronic materials as well as exhibitions of the material. Copyrights will be retained by their respective producers.

For additional ideas, you may wish to visit Laurie Palmer's 3 Acres on the Lake for the closest approximation of our project.
